President-elect Vieira of Guinea-Bissau on visit to Libya

Guinea-Bissau president-elect Joao Bernardo "Nino" Vieira arrived in the central Libyan city of Sirte at the start of an official visit to the North African country.

A member of the historic command of the Libyan revolution, General Aboubaker Younes Jaber was among senior Libyan government officials who received Vieira on arrival at the Sirte international airport. There has been no official comment on the visit by the Guinea-Bissau president-elect, but Vieira has been visiting several African and European capitals for talks since his controversial election last July.

Vieira`s challenger in the second round presidential election on 24 July, Malam Becai Sanha, has refused to concede defeat and demanded a recount of votes in several parts of the country, alleging the poll was rigged. The two candidates have been touring several African capitals to explain their cases. There is also a controversy brewing over the date of his inauguration.
