African Union (AU) Commission President Alpha Oumar Konaré arrived leading a delegation to attend the sixth anniversary of the "Sirte Declaration", for the creation of the continental political organisation on 9 September 1999. Addressing an arrival press conference, Konaré indicated that his visit was of "capital importance because it comes in September, a month during which events that occurred in Libya changed the course of history.
"In fact, the first of September 1969 saw the launch of the Libyan Fateh revolution, while the AU was founded on 9 September 1999," Konare told journalists. He added that his visit would further consolidate the positive outcome of the fifth ordinary AU summit, which took lace in Sirte, central Libya on 4-5 July 2005." As we observe the sixth anniversary of the formation of the AU, we also celebrate achievements that will lead towards the creation of the United States of Africa," the AU Commission president added. Konaré seized the opportunity to congratulate "African leaders for backing the AU process and witnessed the launch of the Union and its organs and institutions on the path to the United States of Africa."
